Essen's Skyline: Steel, Coal, and a Changing Horizon

The Essen skyline as seen from the area around the Rathaus, north of the city center, looking south. The panoramic view begins with the unmistakable structure of Zeche Zollverein, Schacht XII, whose mining tower has become the defining symbol of the city’s industrial past and that of the entire Ruhr region. Its steel structure serves as a reminder of Essen’s deep connection to coal mining and the industrial landscape that transformed this part of Germany.

As we enter the historic center, the Essener Münster rises before us—the religious heart of the city—whose compact structure and towers provide a historic counterpoint to the industrial skyline. Nearby stands the imposing silhouette of the Alte Synagoge Essen, recognizable by its monumental architecture and large dome—one of the most distinctive buildings in the city center.

The urban landscape continues with the curved forms of the Aalto Theater, designed by Alvar Aalto, whose organic architecture breaks up the verticality of the skyline and embodies Essen’s cultural identity. Next stands the RWE Tower, one of the city’s major contemporary landmarks and one of the most recognizable vertical features of its modern skyline.

Finally, in the distance, the Essen TV Tower rises above the horizon, capping off a panoramic view in which mining heritage, history, and contemporary architecture tell the story of Essen’s transformation and the industrial identity of the Ruhr region.

Instructions

Remove your city skyline from the box.

To ensure secure attachment, apply double-sided adhesive strips to the back of the skyline evenly, using a minimum of three to four attachment points.

Carefully wipe the surface where you wish to attach the skyline with a dry, dust-free cloth to ensure that the surface is free of grease and dirt.

Remove the protection from the back of the adhesive points and gently press the skyline against the desired surface to secure it in place.

Verify that the skyline is securely attached and is level before releasing it. Adjust if necessary.

How can they be attached to the wall?

In the product we include an envelope with padded double-sided adhesives to fix on the wall. They are transparent dots that must be peeled off and placed on the back of the piece distributing them evenly and in the thickest parts of the skyline, then remove the protection on the other side and fix on the wall.

Can it be hung on stippled or plastered walls?

There would be no problem to fix the skylines on a stippled wall as the double-sided adhesive tape we include is padded and very resistant. In addition, the skylines are not too heavy. However, you have to consider the roughness and type of stippling on your wall. We do not recommend it for brick or plastered walls. The ideal is to place it on a smooth wall, because it adheres better.

Is it possible to make this model in custom size or larger?

At the moment it is not possible, as we must take into account the logistical limitations of packages larger than 100 cm.

Is it possible to order a city that is not in the catalog?

Each piece is 6 mm thick. The black version is made from MDF with a matte finish; the natural and brown versions combine an MDF core with a natural birch finish. The silhouette is cut with a high-precision laser for impeccable detail, and the edges are polished by hand. It is a handcrafted piece designed and made in Spain.
